This system will be used in our firefighting robot project. The goal of this circuit is to detect a flame using an flame sensor, and triggering a response to enable a fan to blow out the flame using a relay to control power to the fan. The flame sensor used is modified to detect infrared light, and can send a analog or digital output signal in the presence of an infrared source, like a flame. I was able to trigger the fan to turn on by using a handheld remote control with an infrared output. I connected the flame sensor to the Arduino Uno using the analog output pin on the flame sensor that can output a number with a range between 0-1000, depending on the distance of the infrared source from the sensor, and the intensity of the light.

The output of the flame sensor can be used to create a range for which a function can execute, for example, do X if the output is less than 200. The Arduino is programmed to send power to a relay, which is connected to a fan on the “normally open” terminal of the relay, meaning that the connection between the fan and relay is an open circuit when the relay is not powered or idle, meaning no power to the fan. When the output of the flame signal is within range, power is sent to the relay, which an electromagnetic closes a switch within the relay, completing the circuit to the fan, turning it on, and blowing out the flame.

In this circuit, I’ll be turning on a fan utilizing a relay, which will turn the fan on depending on the reading of the flame sensor.
